GO stands for Garden Organics material. GO bins are designed for your garden waste. This organic waste will be collected fortnightly and then processed into a suitable product.  This allows for nutrients to be returned to the environment in parks, gardens and farms.  

Council is committed to rolling out the new service from July 2026. Upon delivery, customers will receive an information pack to inform them about the GO bin. The service will be offered on a fortnightly basis using 240L GO bins with a green lid. Collection days will be fortnightly with bins correctly placed on the kerbside and spaced 1 metre apart.

Reduce landfill: By separating garden waste, more organic material can be diverted for re-use rather than ending up in landfill.   

Reduce costs: Diverting organics effectively reduces costs associated with landfill disposal fees and the Queensland Waste Levy, which helps to keep waste charges lower over time as the waste levy increases in the long term.  

Environmental benefits: Composting organic waste reduces emissions and returns nutrients to the soil through compost and mulch.  

We are currently working through the eligibility criteria for residents who qualify for a Garden Organics bin. Council will ensure that the right-sized properties will be able to have the service while also taking into consideration value, area, and the organic waste generated.  

There will be a fee and charge for the new Garden Organics service that will cover the cost to collect, process, and administer the service. Council will take into consideration all these factors with a focus on providing residents with the best value for the new service. 

The introduction of the GO service will not replace the existing kerbside collection services. Residents are encouraged to continue using the recycling bin as usual by separating recyclable materials from general waste and placing them in their yellow lid recycling bins. The GO service is specifically designed to collect organic garden waste and promote resource recovery.  

Residents are always encouraged to compost at home; this is highly efficient and creates a useful product for reuse at home. A home composting system is ideal for placing food waste and items made from compostable materials that should not be placed in your GO bin. The GO service can be seen as complementary to home composting, if you are already doing that, and provides additional capacity if not everything can be dealt with at home, such as large volumes of grass clippings or weeds.

The core GO service is being implemented for residential properties. However, it is possible in the future, Council recognises the important part businesses and commercial properties play in recovering organic materials.  

Council is still considering how it may include businesses and commercial entities. Information about the processes, eligibility, and participation of non-residential properties will be communicated separately, once finalised.  

Only 240L bins will be delivered. The service will include one bin per household. If your household generates more Garden Organics, we suggest acquiring the services of a local green organics collector.    

Yes, special GO bin trucks will collect your garden organics to be delivered to the dedicated resource recovery area to be processed into a suitable reusable product.   

If your GO bin is too full or too heavy, it may not be serviced. You can acquire a second GO bin, continue to take garden waste to the Transfer Station, or hire a skip service.

Method:  

1. Place dry ingredients like twigs and small branches on the base.  

2. Place your grass clippings over as these tend to be wet. 

3. Cover with dry garden materials. 

4. Make sure the lid closes and nothing is poking out.  

NOTE: materials must be placed loose in the bin and NOT in plastic bags or boxes.
