Our Strategy
Seeding our legacy
Since our opening in 1988, the team at Tondoon Botanic Gardens has been committed to conserving the region's unique local flora. The Gardens’ mission is to maintain and present a native Australian Botanic Garden curating a scientific collection of regional plant species from Central Queensland (specifically Port Curtis). A significant collection of live plants from Tropical North Queensland is also on display. Specifically, the Gardens aim to:
- Display and research the native plants of the Port Curtis region of Queensland
- Identify and label individual plant species and maintain a system of records to ensure the scientific value of the collection
- Preserve and maintain a representative selection of species and community’s endemic to the region and site
- Educate people of all ages in the conservation of our region's flora
- Create a passive recreation area for residents and visitors
- Promote the Gardens as a significant tourist attraction to the region and Queenslanders
- Be the signature park within the network of open spaces in Gladstone
- Be part of the National System of Regional Botanic Gardens
Our strategic plan is to encourage the continuation of the conservation of native flora and fauna. Council is committed to maintaining and improving the Gardens to a standard valued by the community and visitors, ensuring it is recognised throughout Australia. View our Ten Year Strategic Plan.
