The system works like a giant pool liner, made up of layers of soil, clay and tough plastic sheets that act as a barrier to stop liquids and gases from escaping into the environment.

It also includes a gas extraction system with pipes that collect methane and other gases produced as the waste breaks down, so they can be safely managed and used or flared to protect the surrounding land and air.

Gladstone Region Councillor Chris Cameron said the installation of the new piggyback liner system commenced in early February and was completed earlier this month.

“Delivery of this project ensures continued safe operation of the site for general waste disposal, while meeting all environmental and legislative requirements,” Councillor Cameron said.

“The completion of this project also paves the way for Council’s next major waste initiative – the construction of Cell 3b at Benaraby Landfill.

“Council allocated $1.5M in the 2025/26 Budget for Cell 3b, with detailed design currently taking place.”

Cr Cameron added that Council remains focused on helping our community understand the impact of their waste choices.

“Through our Waste Education and Engagement Plan 2024–26 and the Let’s Get it Sorted campaign, we’re encouraging better disposal habits because every bit of waste diverted from landfill helps reduce the financial burden on ratepayers and delays the need for costly new landfill cells,” he said.
