Gladstone Region Mayor Matt Burnett said Council will now continue to seek funding opportunities for the project as one of its Strategic Priorities.

“The Harvey Road Sports and Events Precinct is a long-term vision of Council with the aim of future proofing our region for sporting growth and recreational opportunities,” Councillor Burnett said.

“An upgrade of the facility would also position our region to host national, state and regional games, carnivals and large outdoor events.

“The precinct upgrade would include Marley Brown Oval, the junior rugby league fields and touch football fields, with the main playing arena moving to centralised location within the precinct.

“The main playing arena would have the potential to hold up to 10,000 spectators and would feature a main grandstand with broadcasting capabilities.”

Cr Burnett said Gladstone has already demonstrated its ability to hold high-profile sporting events following the success of the mid-season NRL game in April 2018 that saw a sell-out crowd of 5200 people witness the Gold Coast Titans defeat Manly Sea Eagles at Marley Brown Oval.

“We’ve also seen Marley Brown Oval host the Hotter Than Hell rock festival, a round of the National Rugby Championship, a Queensland Reds pre-season match and a Brisbane Roar pre-season match, in addition to being the host venue of the Jason Hetherington Gary Larson Cup for more than a decade,” he said.

“An upgraded precinct will also continue to support grassroots and regional sports participation and accommodate local day-to-day use.”
