Come along to Agnes Water and help preserve the local Pandanus trees (Pandanus tectorius), plant new Pandanus plants, and sow seeds. RSVP required (max. attendees 30)
Coastal Ecosystem and Pandanus dieback Specialist, Joel Fostin, will share insights on Pandanus dieback, a disease found in Pandanus trees caused by an infestation of Pandanus leafhopper (Jamella australiae).
Topics include:
- Pandanus population preservation and restoration methods
- Evolutionary history, and traditional custodians’ use of Pandanus
- Ecological function and importance of Pandanus in coastal ecosystems, and interactions between Pandanus and coastal flora and fauna
- Risks of beach fires to Pandanus trees and coastal floristic communities.
- Pandanus dieback management, secondary insects contributing to dieback, and other natural predators
- Newly discovered and host-specific invertebrates
- Leaf stripping.
Bring:
- Closed shoes
- Sturdy gloves (Pandanus leaves are sharp!), a spade and/or shovel, watering can/bucket
- Chair or blanket for sitting on the ground
- Sun protection - hat, sunglasses, sun protective clothing, sunscreen, and water bottle.
