What’s been happening?

• Stage 1
  • Local road users will notice that Stage 1 of the Lowmead Road works was completed in late-2023, using funding from the Queensland Government’s Transport Infrastructure Development Scheme (TIDS). These completed works are within the first two kilometres of Lowmead Road after turning off from Fingerboard Road.
• Stage 2, 3 and 4
  • Vegetation clearing to enable road widening and sealing is now complete.

Planned works, site conditions and weather permitting:

• Stage 2
  • Stage 2 is approximately a 7km section of road that commences at the Colosseum Creek crossing and continues towards Lowmead. Construction works are on-track to commence in August 2024. 
• Stage 3, Stage 4
  • Council has appointed a contractor to accelerate road widening, drainage and sealing works in Stages 3 and 4. The contractor will also be constructing a new bridge across Granite Creek on the upstream side of the current causeway.
  • Road sealing works are forecast late-2024.
  • Minor road realignments on Lowmead Road will occur late-2024, once the new bridge is ready for operation.
• Road conditions to expect until late 2024
  • Suburb: Lowmead to Mount Tom
  • Street: Lowmead Road from Clarkes Rd to Fingerboard Rd
  • What’s happening?
    • Road works. Closed. Local traffic only
    • Detour for non-local traffic via Gorge Road, Lowmead or Tablelands Road, Berajondo
    • Expect delays. Follow signs and directions

More information 

• All forecast works in 2024 will occur either on or directly adjacent to the existing road. Traffic controls will be in place, so please observe directions and reduced speed zones at all times.
• Local road users should anticipate a significant increase in site activity from about May to October 2024 when multiple crews (both Council and Contractors) will be working simultaneously across Stages 2, 3 and 4.
• Noise, dust, construction traffic and heavy machinery is expected in the area.  

The Lowmead Road Safety and Sealing Upgrade project is being delivered by Council and its Contractors in 2024 and is included in Council’s Capital Works program. This project has secured the support of the Federal Government to widen and seal more than 20km of Lowmead Road in 2024 via the Remote Roads Upgrade Pilot Program (RRUPP). The Granite Creek Bridge project has secured funding from Disaster Recovery Funding Arrangements (DRFA), which joins Commonwealth and State government funding to help communities recover from disasters.
