Flying drones from Council land
The Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA) through the Civil Aviation Safety Regulations Part 101 regulates flying of drones and other Remotely Piloted Aircraft (RPA) in Australia.
CASA regulates the flying of drones and other RPA when they are in the air.
As the landowner/manager, Gladstone Regional Council does not have any specific or special regulatory requirements regarding the use of drones in Council-owned public spaces, such as parks, in the Gladstone Region. We defer to the legislative and regulatory requirements administered by CASA.
Provided that drone operators comply with all relevant legislative and regulatory requirements, there are no additional Council approvals required to operate a drone within the Gladstone Region.
Council does, however, recommend the following:
- You always follow CASA recommendations and best practice guidelines when operating a drone or RPA
- You obtain and maintain all registrations, licences and accreditations for drone operations
- You hold public liability insurance for drone operations
- You operate in a manner that respects the privacy of individuals and the public.
The CASA rules for flying drones recreationally are detailed on the CASA website. These rules are designed to protect other people, both in the air and on the ground.
Privacy
Council cannot regulate privacy issues that may arise from the flying of drones from Council-owned or managed land.
The Office of the Australian Information Commissioner website provides information about drones and privacy that may assist you in addressing any privacy concerns.
