Air Quality

Clean and Healthy Air for Gladstone Project

Air quality is an essential component for a healthy community and environment. It is important community members have access to the appropriate resources to help them better understand the issues that impact air quality.

To ensure air quality in the Gladstone Region promotes a healthy community and environment, Gladstone Regional Council participates in the Gladstone Air Quality Community Group

consists of community, industry, government and research stakeholders that meet every two months to further the group’s vision to achieve a greater understanding of air quality monitoring in the Gladstone Region.

The Clean and Healthy Air for Gladstone project was completed in 2011 by the Department of Environment and Science and Queensland Health. The final report and implementation plan are available from the Department of Environment and Science (DES) website.

The project involved an expansion on the existing ambient air monitoring program. Results were assessed to determine the level of contaminants in air emission and their actual and potential impact to human health.

Recommendations included:

  • The modification to existing emission limits and monitoring requirements in addition to increased air quality requirements in project approvals
  • Creation and maintenance of a comprehensive air inventory for Gladstone by DES
  • Cumulative impacts to be incorporated into land use planning
  • Continued consultation occurs with the community, industry and local government into the future regarding air quality matters.

DES operates a network of air quality monitoring stations in the Gladstone area.
