Police Creek Railway Bridge Closure
Warning
The footbridge is closed to all pedestrian access until further notice.
As part of remedial works on the Police Creek Railway Bridge in July 2025, significant structural deterioration was identified.
To keep our community safe, a full closure of the historical pedestrian bridge, located near Blain Park, Gladstone, was implemented immediately.
What's been happening?
Council is extremely aware of the connection this popular asset provides for the community; however, public safety is a priority, and the footbridge remains fully closed to the public until further notice.
Our teams have engaged in an extensive investigation phase to identify options for consideration, assess viability and risks, estimate costs and timeframes, evaluate social and environmental impacts, and identify any requirements or approvals.
Investigations confirmed the footbridge has sustained considerable structural damage, particularly to the pylons located within the creek that support the pedestrian platform.
This damage makes the structure unsafe for public use and requires specialised repair works.
Preliminary approval for works
Given the footbridge’s heritage listing, Council must obtain several statutory approvals before any on-site works can begin.
Council has secured preliminary heritage approval to undertake remediation works on the bridge, subject to the submission of detailed design drawings.
The next step will be to prepare procurement documentation and associated approvals to progress a tender process for a contractor to undertake the design and construction of the repair works.
Council is hopeful that if final heritage approval is received about mid-year, the repairs can then occur, and the bridge may possibly reopen in late 2026.
More refined timeframes will be determined as the procurement stage progresses.
Bridge closure remains in place
In the meantime, bridge closure signage has been installed on both sides of the structure to clearly prohibit public access.
However, temporary fencing installed on both sides has been taken down following repeated damage and removal by the public.
After evaluating various options, Council determined that the continual interference was creating excessive costs and heightened safety risks.
We appreciated the community’s patience and understanding.
