Pedestrian footbridge to remain closed due to structural damage
Published on 10 December 2025
The heritage-listed Police Creek Railway Bridge, a pedestrian footbridge located at West Gladstone, will continue to remain closed following extensive investigations undertaken in recent months.
Investigations confirmed the footbridge has sustained considerable structural damage, particularly to the pylons located within the creek that support the pedestrian platform.
This damage makes the structure unsafe for public use and requires specialised repair works.
Given the footbridge’s heritage listing, Council must obtain several statutory approvals before any on-site works can begin.
HISTORY: The Police Creek Railway Bridge can be traced back to the early 1900s.
Current timeframes indicate it could take between six and 12 months to secure the necessary permits and approvals, undertake a competitive tender process, engage suitably qualified contractors specialising in water-crossing bridge repairs and schedule works based on contractor availability.
As a result, Council anticipates the footbridge may not be reopened for public access until December 2026.
Gladstone Region Mayor Matt Burnett acknowledged the pedestrian bridge – linking to Blain Park, the nearby Lions Park and other community facilities – was popular within the community while in use.
“However, the safety of residents and visitors will continue to be Council’s highest priority and we appreciate the community’s patience while this closure remains in place.”
