Work to begin on shared footpath near Calliope State School

Construction of a new shared path along the Dawson Highway at Calliope will commence on Tuesday 8 September.

Gladstone Regional Council will construct a 2.5-metre-wide concrete shared path along approximately 170 metres of the Dawson Highway, between the Welsh Street cul-de-sac and Dawson Highway underpass at the rail corridor.

Gladstone Region Mayor Matt Burnett said the new path will provide a dedicated connection for pedestrians and cyclists to the existing footpath network.

“This footpath is located opposite Calliope State School and once complete it will improve safety and connectivity while reducing the need for students and residents to share the roadway with motorists,” Mayor Burnett said.

“Works will be delivered by Council’s roads crew and are expected to continue for two months, with completion expected by the end of October depending on site conditions and weather.

“This is another project to support Council’s Pedestrian and Cycle Strategy and we appreciate the community’s cooperation and understanding while these important works are delivered.”

Works are expected to be complete by late November 2026.

The Dawson Highway, School Crossing to Underpass, Construct Shared Path project is proudly funded by the Queensland Government’s 2025-26 Cycle Network Local Government Grants (CNLGG) program and Gladstone Regional Council.

What to expect
  • Residents and road users should expect construction vehicles, machinery and workers in the area, along with some noise, vibration and dust during construction
  • Works will generally occur Monday to Friday between 6am and 6pm
  • Pedestrian and cyclist detours will be in place around the work area, and we ask the community to follow all signage and directions
  • Nearby residents have been informed ahead of work commencing – there may be some brief interruptions to property access at times as construction progresses
