Upcoming culvert replacement on rural connector road
Published on 23 June 2026
Gladstone Regional Council will commence works in July to replace an ageing culvert on Blackmans Gap Road, delivering a safer and more resilient piece of road infrastructure for the community.
Works are expected to begin from 1 July, weather and site conditions permitting, with completion anticipated in September 2026.
The project will involve replacing three existing corrugated steel culvert pipes, which are approximately 45 years old, with new precast reinforced concrete box culverts. The upgrade will also include the construction of wingwalls, headwalls and aprons, along with associated roadworks.
The culvert is located on Blackmans Gap Road, Colosseum, between the Vanderwolfs Road and Burgess Road intersections.

The new structure has been designed to better protect the asset from erosion and environmental impacts while reducing the need for ongoing maintenance.
Gladstone Region Mayor Matt Burnett said the upgrade would improve the long-term reliability of an important regional road.
“Investing in the renewal of ageing infrastructure helps ensure our road network remains safe and functional for the communities and industries that rely on it every day,” Mayor Burnett said.
“This project will future proof the crossing, improve flood resilience and reduce the frequency of future maintenance.”
Preparatory works will include the construction of a temporary single-lane side-track to allow traffic to safely detour around the work area while the culvert replacement is undertaken.
Motorists can expect changed traffic conditions throughout the project, including traffic signals, reduced speed limits and occasional delays. Works are scheduled to take place Monday to Friday between 7am and 5pm.
Some vegetation removal will be required to facilitate the temporary side-track. Council has undertaken environmental assessments and will only remove vegetation where necessary to support the works and maintain safety. A qualified fauna spotter/catcher will be present during clearing activities.
Council thanks residents and motorists for their patience and cooperation while these important improvements are delivered.
