Gladstone Regional Council is asking for community feedback on the future design of the 50m pool within Gladstone Aquatic Centre.

A community survey is now open via Council’s Conversations website and will remain open until 11.59pm on Thursday, 30 July 2026.

Gladstone Region Mayor Matt Burnett said the survey will ask participants how they use the facility, including their expectations and vision for how the new pool will look.

“Council is currently evaluating its options to replace the 50m pool, but we would like to hear what the community has to say before committing to the design of the pool,” Mayor Burnett said.

“There are options for a like-for-like replacement, which would be an eight-lane pool, or a 10-lane Olympic standard pool built to World Aquatics standards, or a mix of both.

“Following the community engagement period, results will be collated and presented at a Council General Meeting before 30 September 2026.

“The engagement results, alongside additional technical investigations, will help guide us on a path forward for the replacement of the 50m pool.”

Gladstone Aquatic Centre remains open for business with the 25m heated pool and changeroom facilities available for use.

Background

The Gladstone Aquatic Facility 50m pool was opened in October 1975 and served the region for 51 years until its closure on 30 April 2026.

During project planning to re-tile the 50m pool in an effort to extend its useful life, ground-penetrating radar scans of the pool floor were undertaken, identifying significant voids.

It was found these voids were compromising the pool structure, causing tiles to crack and substantial water leaks into the ground below.

With the voids identified, a decision was made to halt this project as it would not deliver the intended result.
