Gladstone Regional Council has received funding from the Queensland Government to help implement a grants program to mitigate the impact of flying-fox roosts on the community.

Residents and businesses can apply for funding up to $2000 per property to assist with the cost of products and services that minimise common flying fox impacts such as noise, droppings, odour and vegetation damage.

Eligible purchases may include car covers, clothesline covers, high-pressure washers, tree trimming or removal, double-glazing or soundproofing, shade structures and similar protective equipment.

If a project exceeds the maximum amount, the applicant will be responsible for paying the remaining amount as a co-payment.

Gladstone Region Councillor Glenn Churchill said that funding for the program is limited and that each application will be thoughtfully assessed and prioritised based on individual circumstances.

“Assistance is designed to help people implement mitigation solutions that directly address the specific impacts residents or businesses are experiencing,” Councillor Churchill said.

“This could be something as simple as a cover to protect your car from flying fox droppings, or installing soundproofing to reduce noise from nearby roosts.

“Flying foxes play an essential role in our ecosystem however they can present challenges when roosting and foraging in urban areas, so this program is about providing practical assistance to households and businesses affected by nearby roosts.

“I encourage anyone living within close proximity to a flying fox roost to visit Council’s website where you will find further information about the program, including program guidelines and an application form.”

Applications close on Sunday, 29 March 2026.
