These works are included in Council’s Capital Works program and will involve construction of a new Columbarium Wall at Bororen Cemetery.

The Gladstone Region Cemetery Plan (2022) identified the need to install more ashes capacity across the cemetery network to recognise the growing preference for cremations.

The existing columbarium wall at Bororen Cemetery is structurally failing and needs to be replaced in the interests of public safety and in respect of those interred.

Construction of a new granite wall, accommodating single and double ashes plots, will replace the existing wall and to additionally meet capacity demand of ashes interment needs of the Bororen and surrounding community.

The new columbarium wall design will be modern, aesthetically appealing and is planned to be built near the cemetery entrance. At this stage, construction is anticipated late this year/early 2027.

Plot transition

After the new wall is built, removal of the existing wall will be necessary.

Before the wall is removed, Council will arrange the transfer of plot reservations. Loved ones will also be moved respectfully from the existing columbarium wall to the new structure. Council will organise and cover all costs for new wall plaques to be situated in a like-for-like location/placement in the new columbarium wall.

Contact Council

Council would like to provide families with the opportunity to remove existing wall memorabilia prior to the commencement of works. If families are unable to remove memorabilia, Council will arrange for safe removal and storage. Council will take care to ensure the safe reinstatement of memorabilia when works are completed.
