QPWS - Feral Animal Control Program (Southend/Curtis Island)

No longer on display. Expired on 14 November 2025, 07:00 PM

Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service (QPWS) is planning to conduct a Feral Animal Control Program from Wednesday, 5 November to Friday, 14 November 2025. The program will include leghold trapping in the southern section of Curtis Island National Park and Southend Conservation Park, targeting foxes, wild dogs, and feral cats. Additionally, ground shooting activities targeting feral pigs will be undertaken further north within Curtis Island National Park, Curtis Island Conservation Park, and Curtis Island State Forest.

These measures are being implemented to protect Flatback Turtle and Yellow Chat habitats and to reduce predation by feral animals, including foxes, wild dogs, feral cats, and feral pigs. QPWS will be installing a number of warning signs within the area informing residents and visitors that traps and firearms will be used within the dune system and other areas within Southend Conservation Park.

To ensure the safety of the public, the following areas are temporarily closed for the duration of the pest management program:

  • Multi-Use Trails 1 and 2
  • No access is permitted in the Southend Conservation Park and Southern National Park above the high-water mark
  • The protected areas North or West of Joey Lees Campground and Access road, or South of Yellow Patch Campground, during the above dates.

Access will remain open to Campgrounds and Day Use Areas via main roads and tracks to Joey Lees Campground, North Turtle Street Day Use Area, Turtle Street Campground, Connor Bluff Day use Area, Graham Creek Boat Ramp, Ship Hill Lookout and Multi-use Trails, excluding Trails 1 and 2.

Facilities will reopen when the event is completed.

Please observe all signage, barriers and directions from rangers and do not enter closed areas.
