Gladstone Regional Council has partnered with Sport4All to champion greater inclusion across sporting clubs and schools within the region.
As part of the partnership, Council will host Sport4All Inclusion Coach James Foster (pictured) for an 18-month placement to help embed inclusive practices in community sport and recreation settings.
The initiative delivers on a key action within Council’s Access and Inclusion Action Plan 2024–2027, which aims to ensure all residents regardless of ability have equal opportunity to participate in community life.
Gladstone Region Mayor Matt Burnett said the partnership reflects Council’s ongoing commitment to creating a more inclusive and accessible region.
“Sport brings people together, builds community and creates a sense of belonging,” Mayor Burnett said.
“Through our collaboration with Sport4All, we’re supporting local clubs and schools to remove barriers, increase understanding and ensure everyone can experience the benefits of sport.”
Funded through the Australian Federal Government and Australian Sports Commission in partnership with Get Skilled Access, the Sport4All Inclusion Coach program provides localised education, training and resources for sporting organisations and schools to help them better welcome people with disability whether as players, volunteers or supporters.
Sport4All State Manager, Southern Queensland, Kim Abbott said the organisation was thrilled to work alongside Gladstone Regional Council.
“Sport4All is excited to partner with Gladstone Regional Council to place a Sport4All Inclusion Coach within the Council team to deliver the national award-winning Sport4All program, by providing education, training, and resources to sporting clubs and schools in the region to enhance inclusion for people with disabilities,” Ms Abbott said.
“The appointment of James Foster as the Sport4All Inclusion Coach in the Gladstone Region assists by providing a localised approach to clubs and schools through the Sport4All program to enhance their capability and sustainability to welcome people with disabilities with opportunities – whether through participation or volunteering.
“We are looking forward to seeing a greater change in grassroots sports in Gladstone going forward.”
Sporting groups and schools are encouraged to email communities@gladstone.qld.gov.au if they are interested in becoming involved in the program.
