Council aligns with ReefClean program for upcoming Clean Up days

Gladstone Regional Council is doing its bit to protect the Southern Great Barrier Reef by registering as a supporting council in the ReefClean Project and is encouraging residents, businesses, community groups and schools across the region to participate in upcoming clean-up days.
For the Gladstone Region, Saturday 18 October has been assigned as our ReefClean Day with a dedicated School ReefClean Day scheduled for Friday 17 October.
Participants are invited to register their own clean-up site through the Tangaroa Blue website (https://tangaroablue.org/gbrcu).
Like previous clean-up events, free clean-up kits including gloves and rubbish bags can be ordered upon registration. To ensure timely delivery, groups are encouraged to register at least two weeks before the event. The clean-up kit bags are essential to disposing of collected rubbish for free at any Gladstone Region waste facility.
To further assist groups in disposing of rubbish as easily as possible, Council will provide skip bins at the following locations on 17-18 October:
- Bunting Park, Calliope
- Canoe Point car park, Tannum Sands
- Gladstone Tondoon Botanic Gardens
- Lions Park, Kin Kora
- Tannum Sands depot (100 Tannum Sands Road).
Gladstone Region Councillor and Gladstone Local Marine Advisory Committee member Karen Davis said Council had previously aligned its clean-up days with Clean Up Australia Day and the Great Northern Clean Up.
“It was decided from 2025 onwards that Council would align with the ReefClean program and take part in the Great Barrier Reef Clean Up each October,” Councillor Davis said.
“Until 2023, Council supported Clean Up Australia Day in March, but due to the hot weather at that time of year the event moved to September to coincide with the Great Northern Clean Up.”
“While we no longer deliver a Clean Up event in March, individuals are still welcome to register sites directly through Clean Up Australia.”
Cr Davis said ReefClean is funded by the Australian Government’s Reef Trust and delivered in partnership with the Tangaroa Blue Foundation, Clean Up Australia and other organisations.
“Gladstone is the gateway to the Southern Great Barrier Reef, so it’s vitally important we help remove as much rubbish and marine debris as possible before the wet season washes it from catchments to the reef,” she said.
