QPWS - Pest Management Control Program Capricornia Cays National Park

Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service (QPWS) will be conducting a Pest Management Control Program within Capricornia Cays National Park, including Tryon Island, Mast Head Island, Hoskyn Island (East and West), Fairfax Island (East and West), North West Island, and Wreck Island, from 1200 hours Tuesday 17 February 2026 to 1200 hours Monday 23 February 2026 (weather permitting). This program forms part of the park’s Conservation Management Program.

All control activities will be undertaken in accordance with approved Pest Management Plans and are designed to protect native plants and wildlife from the impacts of pest animals.

The program will involve ground-based live-fire operations.

As a result, the following islands will be temporarily closed, and a 2000-metre exclusion zone seaward from the high-water mark will be enforced for all land and waters within the areas listed below for the duration of the program:

  • Tryon Island – Latitude 23°14.805’S, Longitude 151°46.754’E
  • Mast Head Island – Latitude 23°32.311’S, Longitude 151°43.616’E
  • Hoskyn Island (East) – Latitude 23°48.075’S, Longitude 152°17.998’E
  • Hoskyn Island (West) – Latitude 23°48.416’S, Longitude 152°17.442’E
  • Fairfax Island (East) – Latitude 23°51.309’S, Longitude 152°22.561’E
  • Fairfax Island (West) – Latitude 23°51.555’S, Longitude 152°22.106’E
  • North West Island – Latitude 23°17.713’S, Longitude 151°42.478’E
  • Wreck Island – Latitude 23°19.952’S, Longitude 151°57.501’E

This exclusion zone applies to all vessels. Any vessels currently anchored within these areas must vacate before the commencement of the exclusion period and remain clear for the duration of the pest management operations.

Please observe all signage, barriers and directions from rangers and do not enter closed areas.
