Gladstone Regional Council is committed to celebrating initiatives that protect and consider the environment. Following are the highlights of the calendar for Council:
Council coordinates Clean Up Australia Day the first Sunday in March as a service to the community. Industries, business, groups, schools and individuals are encouraged to register a site or as an individual via the Clean Up Australia Day website at www.cleanupaustraliaday.org.au and then attend at their registered site on the day. Council provides trucks and staff to collect and dispose of the rubbish cleaned up during the day through the region.
Council's environmental staff raise awareness each March of Earth Hour when residents are encouraged to turn off their lights for an hour to help highlight how collective community action can protect the planet and enhance sustainability.
Annually in June, Council hosts Central Queenland largest celebration of environmental initiatives through Ecofest. This event coincides with World Environment Day and attracts more than 7000 visitors to Tondoon Botanic Gardens. Industries, businesses, groups and individuals display information on their environmental achievements and sell wares that are environmentally considerate. There are also many environmental attractions and activities for families. This year Ecofest will be held on Sunday, June 2.
