Gladstone Harbour Islands
From the 1 February 2008 permits have been introduced for camping at the Oaks, Facing Island and South End campground, Curtis Island.

Permits can be obtained from the Gladstone Visitor Information Office located at Bryan Jordan Drive (Marina complex) or phoning 4972 9000. The Office is open 7 days a week. Hours are Monday - Friday 8:30am to 5pm, Saturday and Sundays 9am to 5pm. For online bookings click here

Please note that bookings should be made in advance to secure a site!

POINTS TO REMEMBER & FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS:
Who will need a permit?
Anyone planning to camp overnight at the Southend campground or The Oaks will require a camping permit. Day visitors will not need a permit.

Payments can be made by cash, cheque or credit card. School group fees have also been introduced for school groups on approved excursions.  Students will be charged at $2.50 each. Bookings will only be confirmed and permits issued once the full payment is received.

Is there an age restriction for camping on the islands?
No, Council is not restricting any age group from camping at the islands.  However persons must be 18 years of age to book a site.

How many sites can I book and how long can I stay?
To allow equal access to the island campgrounds there will be a maximum allocation of three (3) sites per family.

There will also be a maximum stay of fourteen (14) days.  Extensions may be granted if no other bookings have been received for the additional time requested.  Please contact the Gladstone Visitor Information Centre on 4972 9000 to organise an extension.

Bookings can be made up to six (6) months in advance of the desired camping date.

Can I choose my campsite?
There will be 20 designated campsites at the Southend campground and 35 at The Oaks. All sites will be numbered and maps will be made available from GAPDL or Council office.  Specific sites can be requested upon booking.

Can I have a campfire?
Wood fires will not be permitted and campers/visitors should bring fuel stoves (gas or kerosene).

Can I take a generator?
Generators are permitted at the campgrounds, however we ask campers to be considerate with regards to noise.

Can I take a chemical toilet?
Composting toilets are located at both campgrounds.  The caretakers on the island clean these daily.
You may take a chemical toilet for short term stays however there are no chemical toilet waste disposal units at the campgrounds.  The waste cannot be emptied in the composting toilets as the chemicals kill the organisms required for the effective operation of the composting systems.  Chemical toilet waste should not be buried or disposed of in the sea.
