Gladstone Regional Council’s Sport and Recreation Section is committed to working with sporting clubs and organisations to build a thriving sport and recreation community encompassing quality facilities and activities run by skilled and capable people.

There are more than 200 clubs and sporting organisations in the Gladstone Region.  Popular sports include netball, touch football, basketball, golf, hockey, Australian rules football, rugby union, rugby league, soccer, tennis, squash, lawn bowls, athletics, cricket, shooting, surf life saving, swimming, sailing, motorsports and gymnastics.

The region has five golf courses, an extensive multipurpose sports facility, an Olympic-size swimming pool, the Benaraby Motorsports complex, over 25 multi-sport ovals and quality facilities for tennis, netball, hockey & squash.

It also includes the State’s most northerly surf beach at Agnes Water and beautiful swimming beaches at Tannum Sands and the nearby Heron Island.

Gladstone Regional Council’s Sport and Recreation Section provide the following support to the local sporting industry:

Club management and planning support - providing information and resources for organising, developing and managing sport and recreation groups..

Community liaison and support - assisting sport and recreation groups, access training and development opportunities and providing information and advice on sourcing funding and club management.

Facility development - facilitation of the effective planning, development and operation of sport and recreation facilities across the region.

Funding programs - administration and delivery of Council's sport and recreation funding programs allowing local organisations to update or develop new facilities, purchase equipment, train members and increase their capacity.

Strategic planning - coordinate the development of key Council recreation planning documents and develop long-term priorities and objectives for Council's sport and recreation provision, including an appropriate mix and location of facilities.

Land provision and management - preparation, implementation and monitoring of leases and other land use agreements on Council and state government owned land.
