Lots of Australia Day activities at Council-supported regional events

There will be lots of Australia Day activities and some free Aussie fare on offer at Council-supported Australia Day community events across the region on January 26.

Gladstone Region Mayor Matt Burnett said members of not-for-profit groups and organisations in 10 of the region’s townships had successfully applied for a Gladstone Regional Council donation to host a public 2018 Australia Day event.

“Council is pleased to offer these donations annually to assist eligible groups willing to host an Australia Day event in their township,” Councillor Burnett said.

“Regional events planned at Bororen, Builyan, Captain Creek, Mount Larcom, Rosedale, Seventeen Seventy, South End, Turkey Beach, Ubobo and Yarwun will complement Council’s major Australia Day Family Fun Day in Gladstone.

“These donations assist community groups with the costs of running a public event while enabling residents in our townships to socialise and enjoy Australia Day within their community.”

Events vary at each township with some groups organising free barbecues or sausage sizzles while others will have various menu items on sale.

Cr Burnett commended regional organisers for their willingness to host an event in their community.

“These groups have been busy organising entertainment, food and activities ranging from lawn bowls and cricket to jumping castles, face painting and waterslides,” he said.

“Some townships will offer Aussie games including the traditional egg and spoon, sack and three-legged races to the more unusual contests of thong, horse shoe or crab pot throwing.

“Other activities planned this year include toad races, sheep shearing and billy kart races with one regional location also offering a bucking bull and a vertical bungee.”
