Free clay workshop and exhibition opening at GRAGM

Gladstone Regional Art Gallery and Museum invite members of the community to come along and celebrate the launch of touring exhibition Clay Stories: Contemporary Indigenous Ceramics from Remote Australia.

Launching at 6pm Friday, 22 February 2019, Gladstone Region Councillor PJ Sobhanian said Clay Stories is a significant survey exhibition of contemporary artworks in ceramic.

“The exhibition is being delivered by established and emerging Indigenous artists from regional Australian art centres; Ernabella Arts, Erub Arts, Girringun Aboriginal Art Centre, Hermannsburg Potters and Tiwi Design,” Councillor Sobhanian said.

Clay Stories presents works that are both sculptural and vessel-based, with each body of work representative of the artists’ connection to Country and as a strong medium for story-telling.

The exhibition is an independent curatorial project developed by Sabbia Gallery, its exhibition curator Anna Grigson, the art centres and the Remote Communities Ceramic Network and supported by Visions of Australia and Artwork Transport.

As part of the exhibition two free clay workshops will be held with artists Nephi Denham and Abe Muriata from Girringun Aboriginal Art Centre. Girringun Aboriginal Art Centre supports and represents Aboriginal people from the rainforest of far North Queensland.
